Compared to other works from Aardman, Early Man does not really stand out. However, the visual meticulousness of the film still enough to attract the audience to the last minute.
Movie Genre: Animation
Director: Nick Park
Actors: Maisie Williams, Richard Ayoade, Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston
Early Man is the latest animated feature from Aardman Animations, the UK animation company best known for films such as Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit, and the Shaun the Sheep series. Early Man has also been re-produced by Nick Park since the Wallace and Gromit trilogy: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit at the 2006 Academy Awards.
Tagged as the most immersive animated feature ever, many have longed for Early Man to become another masterpiece of Aardman. However, the image is not adjustable to where it can not fill the lead of the very sketchy of Early Man.
Early Man brought the audience to the early days of Earth where prehistoric people lived. Dug's Stone Goddess (Eddie Redmayne voices) lives peacefully in the green valley by hunting rabbits through the ages. However, things are suddenly rumbling when the valley is invaded by greedy lord Nooth (voiced by Tom Hiddleston) from Bronze. To protect his homeland, Dug and his tribe have to win the game ... soccer ball against the superstar team of the Bronze.
The animated films of Aardman have always been famous for their inventive, light and meaningful plot. Sadly, Early Man lacked the essence. The novel from the prehistoric era quickly disappeared when the film revealed itself to be a sports film. The story becomes boring, with the same details as the movies of the same genre. The lesson of teamwork that the film brings so familiar and nothing new in the way.
Because there are so many characters in the movie, the movie does not have a lot of character development time. The main character Dug is dynamic and energetic. There is no depth but his sincerity easily captures the sympathy of the audience. Princess Nooth is more amusing than haters. The fans of Tom Hiddleston will be a laughing phen when the character speaks. Hognob is also the bright spot, the most funny situations in the film come from this wild boar.
The remaining characters do not leave much impression. Most appear only for fun and to have enough squads and no other purpose.
However, thanks to the excellent visuals, audiences can still rip through the storyline. Aardman once again confirmed that they are the best animated film company in the world. From the lush green forest to the massive Copper City or the huge pavilions are meticulously maintained. The movement of the character is also very smooth, demonstrating the effort of the team has removed. In addition, Early Man also bold style of British cinema with charming satire.
Overall, Early Man was not Aardman's best work, but it was still a good fit for the whole family of entertainers at the beginning of the year. The plot is not outstanding, but still very cute and easy to see.
