The Punisher (2017)

Well written, well acted. with great scenes and action sequences it is hard to not like this series, as a guy whom has read many many comics over the years it certainly lifts them up as the show brings something towards the comics. a great performance done by Jon as The Punisher. since i have seen him in other TV shows/movies i knew he could play the role well.

we explore what makes the Punisher and what he is made of in this series. we see his back grounds and we see his perspectives as the show continues. the chemistry between characters is done well especially with Karen. All in all a great series and is right up there in the front lines with Daredevil and i look forward to the next season for sure

Bogged down by side stories

"The Punisher" has potential but moves far too slow for what it is trying to do. The first half of S1 could probably be condensed down into two episodes. Far too much time is waste on frivolous side plots and scenes that contribute nothing to the overall story. This would be excusable if those scenes led to any sort of character development, but as with most Marvel entertainment, the characters are paper thin (which is fine since it operates in the superhero genre).

Madani's entire arc is extremely boring, especially since the corrupt cop/soldier angle has been played to death in Marvel's other Netflix series already. The show needs to focus more on Frank and cut down plodding scenes that contribute nothing but confusion to a show that is at its core action based.

Right up there with Daredevil

Marvel's The Punisher is a brooding, greedy and brutal.

It's no secret to the fans of the character, that the image of Frank Castle has never gotten the proper treatment on the big screen. After seeing Jon Bernthal take on the role of Castle in the second season of Daredevil, I knew that I have finally witnessed the Punisher come to life in all of his glory. Jon Bernthal makes you forget the bad dream that was the 2004 movie with Thomas Jane, and even Ray Stevenson in the 2008 movie that had a good character, but was just a bad movie in general.

Jon Bernthal brings Frank Castle to life like we've never seen before; Brutal, focused, calculating, effective, but this human, still flesh and blood. He's broken, he's full of guilt, and you want him to win.

The show does a great job of making the character work, and the chemistry between Castle and Ebon Moss-Bachrach's David Lieberman really makes it stand out, and creates a source of comic relief in an otherwise very serious show. Just how dark and serious are we talking here? Well, the first laugh I had was around episode 4, and the show maintains a serious tone all the way through, reminding you that you're not watching the Disney version of Marvel, and not even the last Marvel shows on Netflix, this is Frank Castle, The Punisher, this is not for the faint of heart, this is not a kids show, this is not a family show. The Punisher was always the Marvel hero for young adults, never intended for children, it's bloody, brutal, and violent.

The show also talks about really heavy things that not a lot of shows dare to, like war veterans and how the system fails them, PTSD and how it's not treated properly, and stolen valor, something that people don't talk about enough, it's heavy, and hard to watch at times, but it's also incorporated very well into the script.

I'm glad this show didn't fall victim to the PC culture, this is currently one of the best shows on Netflix, and the best adaptation of The Punisher to date. If you're a fan of the Punisher, you must watch this show, but stay away if you didn't yet watch Daredevil, just to cover all the plot points.

My only problem with it, is that it gets a little predictable, not hiding the plot twists very well.

Brutal, violent but a bloody good time nonetheless!

This is probably the most gore-fest TV series I have seen from Marvel and I am so happy that they didn't try to PG-rate anything. This is how violent I expected the Punisher to be and that is what I love about this series. Punisher has never been the hero, he is always been a character that justifies killing the bad guys instead of bringing them to incompetent justice. You also bound to agree with him because of how brutally his family was taken away from him. Jon Bernthal is the best guy to portray the anger, violence and turbulence that runs inside Frank Castle. He gives such an incredible and convincing performance that it never feels like him killing the bad guys is not justified (his version of justice). David Lieberman also felt someone who was grounding Frank the whole series and his arc also played well in keeping Frank reminded of what it feels to have a friend and family. The villains are not as fleshed out as what I expected after Daredevil (Wilson Fisk) and Jessica Jones (Killgrave) and that felt a little on the nose and predictable. There were no surprises as to who would be the bad guys. All-in-all, I think after the miss that Iron Fist was, The Punisher is a solid entry and I am happy that it has all the violence and doesn't shy away from the bloodshed that Punisher is always surrounded by and I mean it when I say that there is a lot of blood. Watch this if you are aware of the anti-hero and also if you love Jon Bernthal as he completely shines in this series.

More than Frank Castle, The Punisher gives its viewers a view into the lives of veterans

Much like most people watching this series now, I was excited to watch this after the Punisher's appearance on Daredevil. Watching this now, however, it is clear that The Punisher does not shy away from some very real and disturbing topics, Post- Traumatic Stress being one of the more universal topics of the series as it focuses on veterans of modern wars. Almost every storyline in this series is rationalized as a result of the US government letting down its citizens, both veteran and civilian.

Some people may go into this series expecting Frank to fight and murder similarly to how he did in Daredevil, but what we see is a far more intriguing look into who Frank is as a person. Every character we witness is three- dimensional, i.e. they are almost all relatable and well-rounded. Humor and wit is prevalent throughout the series, in addition to some very emotional scenes. Not to worry those who want to see some good fight scenes, as The Punisher is definitely not short on those either. I personally found the separation between the fighting and more docile scenes to be fairly stark, although I appreciate each episode as a whole for its ability to switch between the two and still tell a linear story.

The acting is superb, especially Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, who maintains an excellent persona of someone who continually fights through their own boundaries in an effort to unveil what ought to be unveiled. Jon Bernthal, no doubt, will continue to be praised for his performance as Frank Castle, as he rightfully should. The quiet rage that he consistently portrays is staggering, and his ability to bring out more than a killing machine of Frank fits perfectly in the storyline. I could go on and on about each of the individual actors and how fantastic their performances are.

Overall, The Punisher is great. It is a new direction from the superhero vibe that Marvel/Netflix has had lately, especially with The Defenders. The Punisher hits far closer to home merely by portraying veterans as they exist today, and how we as a society tend to interact with them. It is intense, graphic, brutal, and honest all at once, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves, or is even willing, to watch such a violent show as The Punisher.

Narcos (2015)

Incidentally, I saw an ad for Narco on YouTube, and instead of skipping the ads like I normally do, I played this one out because I was genuinely excited for what I was watching. Instantly I jumped onto Netflix and I was not disappointed. This is a truly gripping show, one of the best I've seen this year. The characters and acting are done well and the storyline moves at a fast enough pace to get your adrenalin pumping for the whole episode. My only fear was that it would be too generic of a Crime drama, but those feelings were quickly swept away. This is truly an original and thoroughly planned out TV show with a whole lot of heart. Maybe the best on Netflix at the moment. Narco doesn't disappoint with any aspect of the show. It's exciting and fast paced, but above all, it makes you want to keep coming back for more. Borg vs McEnroe (2017)

I was fortunate enough to see "Borg McEnroe (2017)" on opening night for the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival. Without giving away too much (especially if you're like me and you didn't know much about this 1980s tennis rivalry coming into it), I will say that this is a fabulous film and everyone involved in the making of it should give themselves a huge pat on the back. They have done an incredible job in crafting a story that successfully explores, analyzes and pays homage to two contrasting albeit equally fascinating personalities in sports history. Both of the titular characters are played to perfection thanks to virtuoso performances from Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf, the latter of whom was practically made for the role. Regardless of what you think about Shia, his commitment to any role is always awe- inspiring and here he gives a performance that so perfectly combines loud-mouthed arrogance with an icy determination that he actually makes it diffi...
